fuck people who blame america’s problems on the government when the real root of the issue is them. how can the government decrease the economic deficit when the people want the institution to maintain all the benefits it offered before the economic crash? how can the government revive the economy when young people of the occupy movements refuse to take jobs they believe are below them? how can the government promote peace when communities are plagued with discrimination? how can the government even begin to reform itself when politicians cannot genuinely express their beliefs because all they worry about is winning elections and re-elections. how can the government stop our children from starving when assholes like donald trump live in skyscrapers with gold toilets? the problems start with us and therefore must end with us. we’re getting to a point where we will have no choice: either we stop being selfish and start considering the bigger picture or we destroy ourselves

all the crazy times, the sneaking out, the parties, the chill nights on the hill looking at the stars, and all the times you were there - you made me the person i am proud to be and the best memories i have, i have shared with you. it sucks you’re in college now because i regret throwing you away, and i miss you
there is no greater sense of excitement than standing at the top of a slope, turning on m83 full volume on my ipod, and adjusting my goggles. i’m about to glide through fresh powder and leave the first tracks amongst an uncharted patch of trees. soon i’ll emerge from the trees, flying down the mountain so fast that other people are only fleeting blurs of color in my peripheral vision. my focus is on the vast expanse of mountains in the distance and the music pulsing through the headphones, timing my quick jumps and turns. the icy burn on my face is a small price to pay for the few minutes of overwhelming control and simultaneous adrenaline rush i will feel…i already miss lake tahoe.

after finishing a good movie, i like to watch cast interviews and see what they show me about the people whose faces i just stared at for two hours. after 50/50, i did the same with joseph gordon-levitt. it was quite easy to dim my laptop screen and really enjoy listening to what he was saying rather than looking at his face, something i can’t say for most other actors. not only does he demonstrate a unique insight into the world he is part of, but is also dangerously honest about it, expounding on its faults as well as its benefits. he does not seem to fear hollywood, but understands that as a fan-based institution, its members like him are the ones who define it. from talking about film as an art movement to interviewing common protestors at occupy wall street, he completely invalidates the common stereotype of being one of the socially and politically disconnected divas we hear so much about. he is the most thought-provoking, retrospective, and genuine actors i have come across

i love the media. it’s absolutely phenomenal how powerfully ideas can be expressed through the most simple, yet complex mediums, like a song or picture; and even more amazing the way creativity can continuously revolutionize those mediums. all cultures seem to be characterized by at least two universal similarities: communication through language, and communication through art. Music, paintings, sculptures, photography, film, all of it seems to impact people in a way that writing or simple speaking cannot. it’s almost as though every person shares this innate kind of understanding of expressive processes no matter where they come from or how old they are, and it is remarkable.

it wasn’t easy staying awake through my english teacher’s rant about my generation’s disregard for “snail mail.” apparently the concept of e-mail discredits the original intent behind written communication. i mean to me its simple evolution - technologically advanced methods will prevail because they are simply more efficient. so what if people don’t sit down and handwrite letters with a fountain pen? why should they if they can type and hit a “send” button? according to my teacher i guess we should also revert to bathing in rivers because only then does some “real thought” go into maintaining personal hygiene. i’m not so sure we’re the ones with the disconnect if she’s under the impression that the substance in communication is affirmed by sheer impracticality.
